BPI Training & Certification
What is BPI?
Building Performance Institute Inc. (BPI) is a leading developer of technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work that are recognized across North America. From these standards, they’ve developed training programs and professional credentialing for individuals that help raise the bar in home performance contracting.
Why is BPI Certification important? DOE Home Performance Score & Home Star!

There's more value to BPI than to providing industry-leading standards and accreditation. In order to participate in the Gold Star portion of the proposed $6 billion HOME STAR energy efficiency initiative as an energy auditor you will need to be BPI Certified (or other US Dept. of Energy approved equivalent).
To qualify for Accreditation as retrofit contractor, your company will need a minimum of two BPI (or equivalent) certifications. Learn more about HOME STAR

BPI Certifications
BPI has created a nationally recognized credentialing program to identify individual excellence in house-as-a-system evaluation, diagnostics and installation. Stringent technical standards and requirements mean that BPI certified professionals are in demand – from homeowners, state and utility energy efficiency incentive programs and weatherization assistance programs.
Certification includes a two hour 100-question written exam and a two hour field exam to demonstrate competency with the energy audit process and equipment. You will then be required to obtain thirty (30) Continuing Education Units and recertify every three years.
While BPI doesn't require training prior to attempting certification, you may find our training invaluable for not only passing the examinations the first time, but also building a strong building science foundation. BPI has found that individuals completing training typically perform better on BPI examinations and to date 96% of GCC students have passed their exams.
Certified professional designations include:
Building Analyst – with this fundamental residential building performance certification you can go beyond the traditional energy audit to perform comprehensive, whole-home assessments, identify problems at the root cause and prescribe and prioritize solutions based on building science.
Envelope / Shell – quantify performance and prescribe improvements to help tighten the building envelope (shell), stop uncontrolled air leakage and optimize comfort, durability and HV/AC performance.
Weatherization (WHALC) – learn to implement real measures to tighten a building envelope to reduce energy loss from air leakage and also reduce pollutants and allergens through air migration. Improve thermal comfort and energy efficiecy through the proper installation of insulation materials.
Green Collar Crew (GCC) BPI Training and Certification
Green Collar Crew’s BPI accredited training is based on building science and the house-as-a-system concept. Students learn the importance of conducting comprehensive whole-home assessments that go beyond a traditional energy audit to locate performance problems at the root source and fix them right – the first time.
Our classes are made up of both classroom theory and hands-on field training by our highly qualified experts covers every aspect of whole-home performance evaluation and execution. The house-as-a-system approach teaches students about the relationships between different components within the home, how to identify problems at the root cause and provide solutions that improve energy efficiency while providing important safety functions such as mold prevention, indoor air quality, carbon monoxide testing, and combustion appliance safety checks.
Upon completion of the classroom and field portions of the training, you will be administered the official BPI written and field certification exams.
